If you are reading this, you may wonder what is this "hoop jam" Christel keeps advertising?
Hooper Lingo

Let me give you a short introduction to the counter-culture of flow arts and some hula hooper lingo to get yourself acquainted.
Picture
Flow Arts: is the blanket term used to describe the many movement-based art forms (e.g., hooping, poi-spinning, dance, and juggling, the list goes on).

That creatively combine:
  • dance
  • prop manipulation
  • movement exploration

People practice flow arts for recreation and sport.

Flow Prop or Skill Toy: is any object used for dexterity-play or object manipulation.

It can be any static or inanimate object a person dances with, manipulates, spins, tosses, or uses for creative expression.
Picture
Flow:
  • refers to one's grace or style using a flow prop or a skill toy (e.g., hula hoop, poi, dragon staff)

  • the state of mind you enter when hula hooping or doing another flow art

Note: American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's said, flow is:

"a state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter..." (Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, 1990).

Hoop Jam or Flow Jam: A hoop or flow jam is a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly indoor or outdoor social event.
Picture
Hula hoopers or flow artists of all skill levels come together to:

  • play
  • dance
  • practice
  • share tricks

At hoop jams hosted by our club, you will have a chance to get acquainted with the hoop in a relaxed setting. Find the 'right' hoop size for you, and ask some questions to members.

Hoop jams are an excellent opportunity for people to start the fitness activity to try it out in an informal, supportive, and fun atmosphere.

Does it matter if I've never hula-hooped before?

No, if you have never played with a hula hoop before, do not worry.

Though a hoop jam is
NOT a class, there will always be a member eager to help get you started at our events.

Christel often gives impromptu mini-classes when she is feeling inspired ;).
Picture
What if I don't own a hula hoop?

Not a problem! At our events, we always have plenty of hula hoops for people to use.

Christel also brings her Afro Hippie Hoops with her to the jams.

Handcrafted, premade, and bespoke hula hoops wrapped in vibrant, beautiful Wax, Ankara prints to the jams. If you would like a hula hoop of your own.

When is the next hoop jam?

Our events are always on our events page, or Facebook page, or my LinkedIn. You can also signup to the email list on the contact page to receive the monthly newsletter and stay updated with all the club's activities.

Is this only for women or children?

Absolutely not! The joy of hooping is for everyone. So come out and join us.
Picture
Does it cost money?

Outdoor events are always free. When the Geneva weather is agreeable, our club often hosts free hoop jams for our community.

Check out a pop-up jam from Marseille, France, in the video below to see the animation.
However, for our indoor events, there is a participation fee:

  • Member: children CHF 10, adults CHF 15
  • Non-Member: children CHF 15, adults CHF 20

The fee helps us to cover the cost of:

  • insurance
  • renting space indoors
  • allows us to produce, maintain, or repair the many hula hoops at your disposal during club events.
Picture
What's the age range?

Our events are family-friendly! All are welcome. My toddler is always running around at our hoop jams.

We have plenty of children-sized hoops and hula hoops small enough for our tiniest hoopers to join in on the fun.

In addition, we often have families who like to bring a picnic or an apéro and enjoy some hula hooping on the side.
Picture
A friendly reminder: Please keep in mind, that though we enjoy sharing the hoop with the public and playing with the kids, we are not a garderie.

It is the responsibility of the parent(s) or guardian(s) to keep your children entertained during the events and out of harm's way.
Picture
This way, we can best share our time and attention with everyone present. We appreciate the consideration!

We hope to see you at the next jam!
