About Hula-Hoop-A-Thon Fundraiser

Picture
We are planning this sporting challenge to:
  • aid us in procuring materials to make and donate hula hoops to children from vulnerable communities in Geneva (80%)
  • assist association Hoop Fitness Genève with administration costs, helping us to continue our mission of developing the activity of hula hooping as an athletic, self-care practice accessible to all (20%)

Why?

Why these two issues? Because we feel that childhood cancer and obesity are two of the greatest threats facing children today.

Did you know?

Cancer is the 1st cause of death by illness in children:
  • every year in Switzerland, between 200 to 220 children below the age of 15 develop cancer
  • infants and children ages 1 to 4 years old account for almost half of all new diagnoses
  • fewer than 2 % of funds dedicated to cancer research are allocated to pediatric cancers
  • the exact causes of childhood cancer are still unknown

Thanks to advances in medicine today, an average of 80% of cases can are successfully treated. Nonetheless, childhood cancer is the second-highest cause of death in children after accidents.

That's why medical research is a vital part of patient care and is the linchpin of future progress. The Foundation supports game-changing cancer research projects that aim to eliminate children's cancer. While ensuring children in Geneva have access to the best possible and latest proven treatments.

We at Hoop Fitness Genève wish to support them in their mission to cure children's cancer and hope to bring awareness to this funding disparity.

Did you know?

A recent study by the
WHO concluded a "global prevalence of insufficient physical activity among school-going adolescents." Roughly eighty percent of children between the ages of 11 and 17 are not physically active enough. Nearly one in eight children aged 7-8 is obese on average in EU countries.
What happens to kids when they don't exercise:
  • increased stress
  • mood swings
  • trouble sleeping
  • reduction in school performance
  • increased risk for disease

This increase in inactivity has significant implications for children's health, including an increased risk of obesity and diabetes. Simply put, children worldwide are not getting enough exercise, and we want to do something about it!

How can we help?

Hoop Fitness Genève wants to do our part with annual hula hoop donations.
The sport of hula hooping is an inexpensive, easily accessible, low-impact activity that:
  • tones the core
  • improves posture
  • promotes weight loss
  • aids in improving joint health
  • reduces anxiety and enhances mood
  • promotes cardiovascular health through a low-impact, calorie-burning workout

Christel's hula hoop brand, Afro Hippie Hoops, formerly of Marseille, France, has donated custom hula hoops to children in vulnerable communities since 2014, donating 150 hula hoops as of 2019. Now located in Geneva, Christel continues this tradition of giving, sharing the joy she finds in the sport of hula hooping with children in the canton. She hopes to donate 50 of her hula hoops to children in 2022.
